Copic Tutorial – How to Color Foliage

Hello Crafters!  Colleen here with a Copic coloring tutorial for Coloring Foliage.  So many of the MIC images include trees, bushes and grass… I figured this would be a good tutorial to begin with.

I started by merging the Park Bench for 2 background with the Sitting Jane character image… and then I pulled out my Green and Yellow Green collection of markers!

Step 1:  There are three separate “foliage” sections – the bushes in the background, the leaves sticking out from the bushes and the grass.  I start by basing them each in a different light color.  (Grass-YG11, Leaves – YG21, Bushes G82)

Step 2:  For coloring, I focus on one area at a time.  Starting with the grass, I added scribbles of G24 to darken the grassy area a bit.  Notice that I didn’t cover up all of the base color.

Step 3:  I went back in at this point and added a layer of YG11 over the entire area to soften the G24 and to bring out the yellow tone again.

Step 4:  Add shading with dots of G05.  Don’t worry about precision here… vary the size of the dots.

Step 5:  Darken shaded areas and cast shadows with G17.  Scribble and/or dot as wanted.

Step 6:  Once the grass is done, move on to another area – here… the bushes.  I’ve added scribbles of G42 to brighten the base color a bit.

Step 7:  Add dots of YG45 to further pull out the yellow tone.

Step 8:  Scribble with G46 to continue to darken the shadow areas.  (Hint – leave each layer dry completely to create crisper lines.)

Step 9:  Add thin scribbles with G28.

Step 10:  Add a touch of G29 to the darkest shadowed areas.  (Notice how loose the scribbles are!)

Step 11:  Add cast shadows from bushes onto the grass with BG96.

Step 12:  Move on to another section of foliage (the leaves).  Add a touch of G02 and G07 to the center of each leaf.  Do not blend

Step 13:  Once each section is colored, add any cast shadows or darken any areas necessary.  You should have a different  “tone” to each green area… but they should all work together.

Then… just color up the rest of the image – creating smooth blends that will contrast with the texture of the foliage!
