Welcome to our very first Clean & Simple challenge. The idea behind these challenges is to keep your cards simple, elegant and make the image the main focus, removing all the clutter. To achieve this concentrate on nice clean lines, positioning your elements straight, keeping matted frames even around the edge, allowing for ‘white space’ to draw the eye towards the main focus.
What is White/Negative Space?
White Space is a term used in graphic design, describing the ‘negative space’ on a page that isn’t filled with clutter pushing your eyes to focus on what is important. It doesn’t necessarily mean the ‘space’ needs to be white. It refers to leaving enough space around your main elements so they don’t feel cluttered.
If you place your character in the bottom left corner of your card, it’s OK to have nothing in the top right (that would become your negative space) and it helps allow the eyes to focus on the character rather than competing with a group of flowers in the top corner. 🙂 There is of course a balance between positive and negative space and it will come with practise.
Throughout these challenges, I challenge you to try reducing the elements you would normally add to a card and experiment with your positive and negative spaces.
